Let’s Celebrate Bees This May

World Bee Day

World Bee Day is on the 20th May and we are celebrating! This important date for your calendar is to raise awareness of the importance of bees as pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development. Without bees there is much we would go without, including food, so we need to look after them. The use of pesticides and poor farming practises has meant that the world bee population is in decline.

Save the Bees Australia

We proudly support @savethebeesaustralia who are on a pursuit to raise awareness about this serious issue. Head on over to @savethebeesaustralia if you would like to support them or learn more. Save the Bees Australia founder, Simon Mulvany, is so passionate and knowledgeable about bees and this issue. His unwavering pursuit of the truth has led him into the Supreme Court in a battle against a major honey producer in recent years- defending his buzzing little creatures. His success in bringing this issue to our attention is of great benefit to the industry and humanity as a whole. He is a warrior with a huge heart! Thank you Simon for shedding light on the importance of looking after our bees.

“Bees are an environmental indicator of the health of an area. If bees are sick so is the environment.” — Simon Mulvany

The Importance of Indigenous Bees

Did you know that there are over 2000 varieties of indigenous bees in Australia and the honeybee is not indigenous? For indigenous bees to thrive we need to conserve indigenous vegetation. Indigenous bees are often overlooked because they don’t produce honey and are wild. Indigenous bees are more susceptible to pesticides than honeybees because they often live underground where the chemicals end up. Managed honeybees can be moved when pesticides are sprayed but indigenous bees can’t.
