Foods that are in season may taste better and offer greater nutritional value. Let’s face it- there is nothing better than eating a crisp Autumn apple! Eating food when it is at the peak of its freshness is not only more delicious and nutritious, but also helps to support local farmers and the community’s economy. It’s also a more sustainable way of eating- to conserve and preserve our natural resources. It’s not unlike our ancestors would have eaten- using the land to grow or forage what they needed, harvesting the plants at just the right time, and then enjoying or preserving what they’ve harvested.
We are so fortunate in Byron Bay to be able to access so many farmers markets in and around the area that are speckled throughout the week. I had so much fun on Thursday’s market chatting to the farmers directly to find out what they have in season and what is to come. Check out the table below to see what’s in store for the coming season (source: www.sustainabletable.org.au
